Packt Publishing: MODx Web Development preview

Recently Packt Publishing released the book MODx Web Development. As an avid MODx user and a developer for the project, I was given the opportunity to review the book (For full disclosure I am receiving a free copy). I have not received my copy yet so I do not have a full review, but have reviewed one chapter and thought I would post my thoughts on it here.

The chapter I have reviewed is Chapter 5: Authentication and Authorization. You can click the previous link to view the chapter in its entirety along with some more information about the author (Antano Solar John) and book.

My initial thoughts are that the chapter is well written and covers one of the difficult topics on MODx development. The chapter does a good job of explaining the basics of user management and should get the average user up and running in no time. The one drawback that I have seen so far is that the user system can get complicated (especially in how manager and web-users can interact in the front end and which one takes precedence) and there is not a lot of depth in how these interactions take place. Although this was hinted at with the mention of the quickedit snippet.

I will hold off final judgment on this chapter and the book as a whole until I have reviewed my copy. After seeing one chapter I am looking forward to reviewing the rest of the book. I will post the final review in my notebook when I have finished reading the book.

If you have already purchased the book, I would love to hear what you think of it in the comments below.

good starter but leaves more questions Ryan Wed September 09, 2009, 17:21:58

After I bought the book I read it pretty extensively and found that it helped explain some areas that I had just sort of missed. I am still confused about chapter 5 - add web user get quick edit. I think that some information was missing. If I just add a user to the web users no groups I have never seen them have access to quick edit unless they are a part of the users section in the back-end. How come nobody writes tutorials on tvs & @inherit (extremely powerful stuff). Thank you for all your great contributions to MODx. I am here at least 4 times a week tweaking Wayfinder!
